Namaste,
I just came back from my India trip.
Modified Lahiri ayanamsa is not offset from normal Lahiri by a fixed amount. The amount varies from day to day and from planet to planet.
The issue here is NOT the starting point of the zodiac. The issue is the 2-dimensional plane onto which 3-dimensional positions of planets are projected for finding their longitudes. This plane varies from time to time in normal Lahiri. In modified Lahiri, a constant plane is used always. That is the difference. Thus, the planetary longitude planes of Lahiri ayanamsa and modified Lahiri ayanamsa are slightly different. Accordingly, projections of various bodies will be different.
Thus, positions of diffierent planets may vary by different amounts. Thus, taking normal Lahiri ayanamsa and subtracting a fixed amount from longitudes does NOT give the positions as per modified Lahiri ayanamsa.
Best regards,
Narasimha

Dear Narasimhaji,
Thanks a lot for providing us this wonderful software.
Pls spare few minutes from your busy schedule and share your comments
for the below mentioned situation.
I have taken the following birth details.
DOB:5th June 1973
TOB: 09:07AM
POB: 79E38,18N01,+5:30East of GMT
If I use the standard Lahiri ayanamsa it is 23-29-09.30 whereas the
modified Lahiri ayanamsa(Mean plane) is 23-29-09.25.So the difference
between these two is 0.05Sec. From this, I think that by taking the
standard Lahiri Ayanamsa and subtracting 0.05Sec from it should
simulate the position for modified ayanamsa.
Pls note the following planetary positions in D-60 chart.
Case 1: Standard Lahiri Ayanamsa
Lagna 17 Sc 13' 35.34" Jye 1 Sc Sg
Sun - MK 21 Li 25' 18.00" Visa 1 Li Ar
Moon - AK 29 Aq 39' 14.39" PBha 3 Aq Ge

Mercury - PK 15 Li 29' 23.44" Swat 3 Li Aq
Jupiter (R) - DK 5 Aq 41' 38.75" Dhan 4 Aq Sc
Venus - GK 13 Ta 09' 33.02" Rohi 1 Ta Ar
Saturn - PiK 18 Pi 12' 53.08" Reva 1 Pi Sg
Rahu - BK 2 Cn 47' 26.53" Puna 4 Cn Cn
Ketu 2 Cp 47' 26.53" USha 2 Cp Cp

Case 2.Modified Lahiri Ayanamsa(Mean plane)
Lagna 17 Sc 13' 38.17" Jye 1 Sc Sg
Sun - BK 22 Li 23' 06.65" Visa 1 Li Ar
Moon - AmK 25 Aq 19' 12.88" PBha 2 Aq Ta
Mars - DK 0 Ge 17' 08.79" Mrig 3 Ge Li
Mercury - MK 19 Li 31' 38.18" Swat 4 Li Pi
Jupiter (R) - GK 6 Aq 24' 27.17" Dhan 4 Aq Sc
Venus - PK 15 Ta 12' 47.41" Rohi 2 Ta Ta
Saturn - PiK 17 Pi 24' 12.12" Reva 1 Pi Sg
Rahu - AK 3 Cn 20' 37.79" Push 1 Cn Le
Ketu 3 Cp 20' 37.79" USha 3 Cp Aq

Case 3. Ayanamsa value of 0.05 Sec is reduced from the standard
Lahiri Ayanamsa to simulate the Modified Lahiri Ayanamsa.

Lagna 17 Sc 13' 38.34" Jye 1 Sc Sg
Sun - MK 21 Li 25' 21.00" Visa 1 Li Ar
Moon - AK 29 Aq 39' 17.39" PBha 3 Aq Ge
Mars - AmK 28 Ta 38' 37.45" Mrig 2 Ta Vi
Mercury - PK 15 Li 29' 26.44" Swat 3 Li Aq
Jupiter (R) - DK 5 Aq 41' 41.75" Dhan 4 Aq Sc
Venus - GK 13 Ta 09' 36.02" Rohi 1 Ta Ar
Saturn - PiK 18 Pi 12' 56.08" Reva 1 Pi Sg
Rahu - BK 2 Cn 47' 29.53" Puna 4 Cn Cn
Ketu 2 Cp 47' 29.53" USha 2 Cp Cp

I assume the planetary degrees in both the cases 2 and 3 should
match. But there is a considerable discrepancy.
For example in Case 2,the moon is at 25 Aq 19' 12.88" whereas it is
29 Aq 39' 17.39" in Case 3.
Kindly spare few minutes and advise the reason for this discrepancy.

Srikanth
