What is Dreshkona?

What is Dreshkona?
By Shree PVR Narasimaha Rao

Namaste,

Dreshkona is another word for drekkana. It is the D-3 chart. Each sign is divided into 3 parts and each part is mapped into a sign.

There are 4 kinds of D-3 charts taught by scholars. In JHora 7.0, you can get Parasara Drekkana, Parivritti Traya (tri-cyclical) Drekkana, Jagannatha Drekkana and Somanathe Drekkana. In our tradition, we use all the three for different purposes.

There are 3 drekkanas per rasi and hence 36 drekkanas. The 22nd drekkana (counting from the drekkana containing lagna) is nothing but the drekkana containing the cusp of the 8th house. Suppose lagna is at 26 deg in Ta. Then the cusp of the 8th house (using equal houses) is at 26 deg in Sg. See in what sign this point falls in D-3. If you do math, you will realize that this is indeed the 22nd drekkana counting from the drekkana containing lagna (7x3+1=22).

Similarly, if you see where the cusp of the 8th house falls in navamsa, that ends up being the 64th navamsa from the navamsa containing lagna (7x9+1=64).

The lords of 22nd drekkana and 64th navamsa are supposed to be marakas (killers).

There is one tricky detail regarding the 22nd drekkana. Are we to take the normal Parasara drekkana or one of the other 3 variations, when finding the 22nd drekkana?

I recommend trying the 22nd drekkana as per Jagannatha Drekkana. In JHora, you can select "Lords of 64th navamsa and 22nd drekkana" in the pop-up menu in the basic longitudes window and get the 64th navamsa lord as well as the 22nd drekkana lord as per 4 variations of D-3 chart.

For the example of lagna at 26 deg in Ta, here is what JHora gives:

---------------------------------------------
Malicious Division Lord
---------------------------------------------
The 64th navamsa Mars
The 22nd drekkana (Pararsara) Sun
The 22nd drekkana (Parivritti traya) Mercury
The 22nd drekkana (Somanatha) Mercury
The 22nd drekkana (Jagannatha) Jupiter
---------------------------------------------

In our tradition, we hold the lords of various divisions containing the cusp of the 8th house to be evil for the matters of the divisions.

For example, 71th dasamsa is the dasamsa containing the cusp of the 8th house. The 71st dasamsa lord is inauspicious in career.

Take Indira Gandhi for example. Her 71st dasamsa is in Libra and the lord is Venus. Saturn is in Libra in D-10 chart. Saturn dasa Venus antardasa during 1977-1980 saw her fall.

Similarly, the lords of the signs containing the cusps of 9th house in various divisions bring fortune related to the matters of the division. For example, Indira Gandhi's 9th house cusp falls in Cancer in D-10. So, Moon is the 81st dasamsa lord and shows fortune in career. Moon antardasa in Jupiter dasa was during 1966-1967 and that was when she suddenly became India's Prime Minister!

I may write more later...

May Jupiter's light shine on us,
Narasimha
